Program Description
The thirty faculty of our interdepartmental PhD in Environmental and Molecular Toxicology Program come from sixteen different departments in the School of Medicine, the Fielding School of Public Health, and the College of Letters and Science at UCLA. Members of our faculty also participate in the activities of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the California Nanosystems Institute and many other research units at UCLA. Areas of particular strength in our program include (1) air pollution (the toxic effects of secondhand cigarette smoke, wild-fire smoke, and fossil fuels and their combustion products); (2) neurotoxicology (particularly the role of pesticides in the etiology of Parkinson's disease); (3) gene-environmental interaction and susceptibility; (4) toxico-epigenetics (e.g. effects of endocrine disruptors and other toxicants); (5) quantitative and computational toxicology; (6) new approach methodologies (organoids, stem cells, zebrafish, Drosophila, C. elegans). These research foci are highly relevant to environmental challenges confronting California and the nation. The program is supported by a training grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Our program is now in its twenty-fifth year.
